Matcha Is Not a Commodity: A Wholesale Sourcing Guide

01 / THE COMMODITY TRAP

THE HIDDEN COST OF BUYING MATCHA LIKE A COMMODITY

Matcha is often bought like a commodity: taste a sample, compare €/kg, place an order.

Then production slips, emails go unanswered or the next lot tastes different. Your team manages the consequences while customers wait.

A dependable Matcha program needs more than a competitive price.

WHAT A TWO-WEEK STOCK GAP MEANS

14 KG

Five locations × 80 drinks daily × 2.5 g per cup × 14 days. Illustrative demand at risk.

02 / THE RISKS

WHERE A SIMPLE PURCHASE GOES WRONG

1 / SUPPLY

NO RESERVED VOLUME

A good sample means little if repeat orders cannot be fulfilled.

ASK: IS OUR VOLUME ALLOCATED?

2 / VISIBILITY

NO DELIVERY UPDATES

Unclear ETAs turn a delay into a last-minute problem for your stores.

ASK: WHO UPDATES US WHEN PLANS CHANGE?

3 / IMPORT

UNEXPECTED BORDER COSTS

Customs, documents, duties and VAT can change your true cost.

ASK: WHO HANDLES IMPORT, AND WHAT'S INCLUDED?

4 / QUALITY

INCONSISTENT BATCHES

A changed flavour or colour can force adjustments across your menu.

ASK: HOW ARE REPEAT LOTS TESTED?

03 / IMPORT & EXPORT

THE OPERATION BEHIND THE BOX

IMPORTING MATCHA HAS MORE MOVING PARTS THAN THE PRICE

  • At origin: Confirm the lot, specification, invoice, packing list and relevant documentation.
  • At the border: Agree who imports, clears customs and pays duties and VAT. DAP and DDP assign different responsibilities.
  • On arrival: Check traceability, storage and replenishment. EU and UK requirements can differ.

If these responsibilities are unclear, one shipment can disrupt the entire program. A reliable partner plans for the next order as carefully as the first.

References: Incoterms, EU import controls and UK food imports. Rules vary by destination and product.
